How to integrate ButterCMS into your Android application

Just follow the simple steps below to complete the integration and begin creating pages with Butter. Be sure to check out our full guide to creating pages using the ButterCMS Android API.

1. First, install our package by adding the following dependency in build.gradle:

2. Initialize the SDK:

To get started with the Butter API, instantiate the ButterCMS client with your Butter API key:

3. Fetch posts or pages:

All ButterCMS Single Pages and Page Types have a configurable Page schema. In order to fetch data from the Butter API, you'll need to make a request using a map of parameters. For the Kotlin/Android SDK, API calls are asynchronous and expect Callback as a parameter.

For pages, because the schema can change, you'll need to model the page as a data class. For blog posts, you can just query the SDK. For example, to fetch all blog posts, you can do:

4. Integrate into your application.

ButterCMSDK calls to the posts or pages API return JSON responses, like the below sample, which can be easily integrated into the framework of your choice.

What kind of database can I use?

No database required! We're a SaaS CMS or CaaS. You simply call our Content API from your app. We host and maintain all of the CMS infrastructure.

Do you host my templates?

Unlike CMSs you might be used to, we don't control or host any of your templates. The design of your app (HTML + CSS) lives in your application along side the rest of your app. Your application calls our Content API and we return your content in JSON format. You can then render this content in any way you'd like.

Can I import my content?

Yep. To import existing content from another platform, simply send us an email.

How do you compare to WordPress?

In short, we offer all the same easy-to-use editing capabilities of WordPress but are significantly easier for developers to setup and maintain. This means you spend less time working on your CMS and more time focusing on things important to your business.

Can I self host Butter?

No, we're a SaaS CMS or CaaS. You simply call our Content API from your app. We host and maintain all of the CMS infrastructure.
